Geological of Cambodia
Cambodia is divided into two different geographic
areas, Northeast Zone and Southwest Zone by plains Tonle Sap, which stretches
from the northwest to southeast direction along the central regions of the
country. Plain Tonle Sap area is one-third of the Central Zone. Northeast and
southwest regions, including metamorphic rock, sedimentary rock, igneous rock,
which created a basal, extended during Precambrian era and Mesozoic era. Most
sedimentary rock of the Mesozoic era is in continental crust. On a large area
of basal area covered by basaltic plateau and soft sedimentary rock during
Neogene era and Quaternary era. Central Zone is an area, which is defined by
thick of condensate sedimentary layer of the Quaternary period, and with a
little mountain. We rarely see rock Paleogene age sector appeared in the area
in Cambodia (See in figure below).
Tectonic setting of Cambodia
Cambodia located in the Indochina block with Laos
and Vietnam. Indochina block located next to the South China block in the north
and Shan-Thai blocks in the West. Border area of each block has fold belt,
accompanied by broken subducted zone. Southwest zone and central zone located
with Indosinian fold belt between Indochina blocks and blocks Shan-Thai.
